Adaptive Costumes Bring Spooktacular Fun to Hospitalized Kids
Halloween is a time of excitement when children eagerly await the moment to transform into their favorite characters. For kids in the hospital, Halloween celebrations are a chance to immerse themselves in joy and distraction from medical treatments and routines.
This October, our goal is to bring the spirit of Halloween to hospitalized kids. In collaboration with Disney, Starlight is delivering Disney adaptive costumes and wheelchair wraps to seriously ill kids so they can celebrate and participate in experiences that support their healing journey.
By providing kids with options that take their needs into account, we can help hospitals create a more inclusive experience. Disney costumes wheelchair wraps are adaptive, ensuring all hospitalized kids can feel confident partaking in Halloween fun!
One hospital partner shares the spooktacular fun and joy these adaptive costumes bring to patients:
"This program is amazing for us to be able to get the things that are donated to give to our patients and seeing how much of an impact it has when we show them the gift [adaptive costumes] just makes my heart melt. I gave one of the Incredibles [adaptive costumes] out to a 14-year-old Osteogenesis Imperfecta patient whom I have been casting since she was a baby, and she was so excited to receive it. She has had thousands of casts in her life, it is so much fun to see her smile. Thank you for this opportunity to make the lives of these children happier." -Maureen Piontek, Orthopedic Tech, Greenfield Orthopedic Clinic - Children's Wisconsin
The adaptive costumes are specifically designed with openings for easy tube access or to accommodate medical devices, such as dialysis pouches.
"Starlight's donation of Disney wheelchair costumes allowed toddlers and teens with complex medical needs to build memories and just be a kid. People who utilize adaptive equipment can wear adaptive costumes that promote health, safety, welfare, and, more importantly, inclusion and participation in the LifeScape Halloween parade. Thank you, Starlight, for providing the resources and creating a truly amazing opportunity to help youth with complex medical needs be proud of their Halloween costumes. These are AMAZING experiences for kids and staff alike. " -Becky Sluiter, LifeScape's Pediatric Specialty Rehabilitation Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD
Moments of Halloween celebration and cheer offer a delightful distraction to kids at the hospital. When kids experience happiness through Disney’s adaptive costumes, they can find the hope and strength they need to get through challenging times.
